Wayne Rooney says Man Utd signing Cristiano Ronaldo will increase pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to win titles

WAYNE ROONEY has warned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: now is the time to win titles.

The former Manchester United star won five Premier League crowns during his 13 years with the club.

But the Red Devils haven’t won since the last of Rooney‘s triumphs back in 2013.

With Cristiano Ronaldo now back in the fold, however, the Derby County boss believes that Solskjaer will know that now is the time to deliver.

He said: “Cristiano is still one of the best players in the world and has won titles everywhere he’s been so he’s going to be huge.

“He still wants to be the best and I’m sure he will have a big impact on them this season.

“Ole will certainly know that he’s in a position now where he needs to start winning these big titles with the players that he’s brought in.

“For their development, to get to the next step now is to start winning titles.”

Ronaldo, 36, had been heavily linked with Manchester City, before making his United return.

But Rooney, 35, never believed that CR7 would cross the Manchester divide.

He added: “I just felt it didn’t seem right, it didn’t feel like it was ever going to happen.

“His agent [Jorge Mendes] did his job because I knew that the minute there was any hope of him going for Man City, United would never let it happen.”

Ronaldo, now on international duty with Portugal, is expected to make his second United debut against Newcastle United next month.

And Solskjaer, 48, believes that anyone questioning Ronaldo’s potential impact will only motivate him more.

The Norwegian said: “Hopefully Cristiano can come in and show what he has done in his career.

“I am sure he likes all the talk about being old. Make it personal and he will show what he can do.

“We are just waiting for the paperwork to be completed. Of course the players are excited, some have played with him in their national team.

“You see the fans – they’re excited. That’s what he does, he’s a special player.”
