Wayne Rooney took less than 5 minutes to accept DC United job and is excited to lock horns with Man Utd pal Phil Neville

WAYNE Rooney took less than five minutes to decide on taking the job at DC United and told pals: “It’s come at the perfect moment.”

The ex-England and Manchester United legend touched down state-side overnight as he set off on his new American adventure.

Wayne Rooney hopes to put pal Phil Neville in the shadows in the MLS

His decision to take over at the Washington-based club comes just weeks after he quit Derby County.

But the 36-year-old is “delighted” to be back in football.

A source said: “There were reports that Wayne might take time off from the game for a bit – but that was never his intention.

“He was interested in TV and punditry work but, in his heart, he wanted to get back in the dugout as soon as he could.

“That’s why when the call came from DC United he made his mind up in about five minutes that it was the right move.

“In many ways it’s the perfect job because it will allow him to carry on his coaching career, which is still in its early stages, without so many eyeballs on him.

“Wayne loved his time at Derby County but he was constantly in the spotlight.

“There will be less of that in America and he is just looking forward to getting his head down and coaching the team.”

Meanwhile the Sun can reveal Wayne has already swapped messages with his ex-team mate Phil Neville, the manager of Inter Miami.

“They’ve had a bit of banter over text,” the source added.

“Inter and DC are due to play in a couple of months time and Wayne is looking forward to locking horns with Phil.

“Wayne has ambitions to one day return to England and manage here and he sees this as a stepping stone to the future.”

According to reports today Rooney WON’T be joined in America by wife Coleen and their four sons.

She is choosing to stay in Cheshire after reportedly telling friends it isn’t the right moment to uproot the family.

It means Wayne could well be away when Coleen finds out the result of her Wagatha Christie trial with Becky Vardy.
