‘What’s he doing there’ – Champions League team of season announced by Uefa leaving fans FUMING with controversial picks

FOOTBALL fans have been left stunned after UEFA announced their Champions League Team of the Season.

Europe’s premier competition concluded on Saturday night as Real Madrid claimed a record-extending 14th title with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in Paris.

Uefa’s Champions League Team of the Season

And four Madrid players have made it into the tournament’s best XI in the form of keeper Thibaut Courtois, midfielder Luka Modric, forward Vinicius Junior and top scorer Karim Benzema.

Despite their final heartbreak, Liverpool have four players in the team of the season – Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho.

The other spot in the defence is filled by Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger – who was integral in the Blues’ run to the quarter-finals before they were eliminated by winners Madrid.

And the final two places in the team have been given to Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne and Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.

Man City were knocked out in the dying moments of their semi-final tie with Madrid, while PSG also came up short against the LaLiga champions in the last 16.

It means the entire XI is made up of either Real Madrid players or players who were eliminated by Los Blancos.

However, some fans were left utterly raging at the selections made by Uefa.

Some were confused by the selection of Mbappe – who scored six goals and provided six assists in eight matches before PSG were knocked out in the second round.

One baffled fan said: “What the hell is Mbappe doing there?”

Another added: “Mbappe went out in last 16. Salah got more goals than him and reached the final. But yeah makes sense.”

And a third said: “Mbappe over Robert Lewandowski!!?????????.

“Lewandowski had twice as many goals as Mbappe in the Champions League!! Only two fewer goals & one fewer goals/assists than Benzema. Lmao!”

Meanwhile, other supporters had various issues with the team selected.

One said: “Vinicius didn’t deserve it even though he scored in final.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold didn’t deserve to be there either. Cancelo over Robertson anyday.”

Another added: “Fabinho over Casemiro is laughable. Virgil van Dijk over Alaba is even more funny.”

And yet another critic said: “Sebastian Haller didn’t make it. How come?”

Ajax forward Haller scored 11 goals in eight matches, with only Lewandowski and Benzema netting more times in the competition this season.
