Abandoned Speedway Track in Minnesota Overgrown and Submerged After Nature Takes Over Following Flood

Fascinating Backstory

Hidden away in rural Minnesota lies a once vibrant race track that now lies dormant and submerged. The Wee Town Outlaw Speedway, a former stock car track, held on for nearly three decades against all odds before succumbing to the forces of nature.

A Historic Venue

Originally opened in 1962 as the Lake Region Speedway, the track attracted locals and racing enthusiasts alike. However, it faced its first closure in 1969. Reopened in 1976 as the West Central Speedway, it continued operations until 1986 when it was forced to shut down again due to high water levels caused by a neighboring lake.

Too Much Water

Don Eggen, former co-owner of the speedway, recounted the facility's struggles: "We had our last season in 1993, and it was a sad day when things shut down for good. Simply put, we just had too much water to deal with. Little did we know at the time that water levels would get much worse."

Nature Reclaims the Land

Since its closure, the Wee Town Outlaw Speedway has been overtaken by the surrounding nature. The wooden bleachers, once filled with spectators, are now covered by undergrowth. Parts of the concrete barriers and main straight are still visible, but the majority of the oval is now underwater.

Evidence of History

While the abandoned track may be easily missed by passersby, there are subtle reminders of its past. Lights and power cords still encircle the track, and tire piles can be spotted among the plant life and water. Additionally, a rusting truck sits partially submerged in the infield.

Fond Memories

Despite its eerie appearance, the Wee Town Outlaw Speedway holds fond memories for the local community. Former co-owner Don Eggen expressed gratitude towards the stock car drivers, family members, and fans who supported the venue for many years. He reminisced, "It was great to see such good turnouts, especially Sunday evenings under the lights."
