F1 Legend David Coulthard Admits to Drinking Alcohol Before Qualifying Race

Former F1 Driver Reveals Shocking Pre-Race Ritual

David Coulthard, a former Formula One driver and British racing legend, has recently opened up about a surprising pre-race ritual he had during his career. Coulthard admitted to drinking alcohol just 30 minutes before a qualifying race at the notorious Monza track in Italy.

Pole Position Despite the Unconventional Approach

Despite the risky decision, Coulthard still managed to secure pole position during the qualification for the 1995 Italian Grand Prix. He shared this unexpected revelation on his podcast Formula For Success while speaking to fellow ex-driver Gerhard Berger.

A Tradition at Monza

In his conversation with Berger, Coulthard explained that he was convinced by the former grand prix winner and other drivers that it was a tradition to have a schnapps before qualifying at the Monza track. Feeling influenced by his peers, Coulthard decided to take a shot of schnapps, which turned out to be just half an hour before his qualifying round. Despite his initial hesitation, the unconventional pre-race ritual seemed to have had a positive effect on his performance.

Debate with Berger

During the podcast, Coulthard playfully accused Berger of drinking water instead of schnapps like the others. However, Berger revealed that he himself used to drink alcohol before every race, opting for amaretto and then an espresso before qualifying.

While Coulthard's pre-race drinking may seem surprising to fans, it serves as a reminder that athletes have their own unique routines and superstitions that they believe contribute to their success on the track.
