F1 Nearer to Adding New Team as Racing Dynasty Receives Green Light

The Andretti family's dream of joining the F1 grid has taken a major step forward after their application was approved by the FIA.

Waiting Game for Andretti

However, their fate now lies in the hands of F1 as they await approval to compete in the 2026 season.

Existing Teams Unhappy

F1's current teams are secretly discontent with the idea of Andretti, led by Michael Andretti, son of Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 champion, sharing their prize money.

The Andretti Racing team, based in Silverstone, would bring one of the most renowned racing families to F1, adding an American element that aligns with Liberty Media's goal of increasing the sport's popularity in the US.

Strict Criteria Met

Their application successfully met the stringent criteria set by the FIA, allowing them to progress to the next stage of the process.

President of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, stated: "The FIA was very clear in establishing rigorous criteria for entry from the outset of the Expressions of Interest procedure. Our objective, after thorough due diligence, was to approve only those entries that met the criteria and demonstrated added value to the sport.

"The FIA is required to approve applications that comply with the application requirements, and we have followed that procedure in deciding that Andretti Formula Racing LLC's application will advance to the next stage.

"By making this decision, the FIA is acting in accordance with EU directives on motor sport participation and development. Andretti Formula Racing LLC was the singular entity that met the selection criteria in all material aspects."
