Sophie Wright, a grid girl in the British Touring Car Championship, suffered a freak accident while celebrating a race win
Glamorous grid girl Sophie Wright was rushed to the hospital and given "lots of morphine" after a freak accident while celebrating a race win. Sophie was attending the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) season finale at Brands Hatch in Kent with team West Surrey Racing. In the third race of the day, team drivers Jake Hill and Stephen Jelley completed a double podium, triggering celebrations from the trackside team. However, disaster struck when Sophie fell and landed awkwardly while hanging on the pitwall. She suffered a broken femur and was promptly taken to Princess Royal University Hospital in South London.
Instagram Updates from the Hospital
Taking to Instagram, Sophie shared images of her bed-ridden state at the hospital. She posted photos of her leg wrapped in plaster and later shared images of her colleagues visiting her. In her post, Sophie expressed gratitude towards the medics, mechanics, crew, team members, friends, and marshals who supported her through the ordeal. She also shared a couple of videos from the hospital, including one where she mentioned having her knee put back into place.
Support from Race Winner Jake Hill
Race winner Jake Hill responded to Sophie's Instagram post, sending her lots of love and expressing his apologies for the accident. Sophie, who has around 4,000 followers on Instagram, is not just a grid girl but also a DJ, presenter, and writer.
F1's Ban on Grid and Pit Girls
It is worth noting that F1 banned grid and pit girls ahead of the 2018 season. In addition, the FIA clamped down on F1 teams' pitwall celebrations by forbidding them from climbing on the fences at any time.
