Jenson Button Tried to Leave Formula One Team Before Winning Maiden Title

Button's F1 Career in Jeopardy

Jenson Button, former Formula One driver, recently revealed that he attempted to leave his team before winning his first championship title in 2009. The future of Button's F1 career was uncertain when Honda announced their withdrawal from the sport.

Discussions with Red Bull

During this uncertain period, Button held discussions with Red Bull about a potential switch. His manager even spoke to Red Bull chief Christian Horner. However, all the contracts were already finalized, and Button was unable to make the move.

Ross Brawn Steps In

Fortunately for Button, Ross Brawn, former Benetton and Ferrari technical director, stepped in and bought the team for just £1. He rebranded it as Brawn GP, ultimately saving Button's F1 career.

Button's Doubts and Determination

Button admitted that he tried to leave the team before the season began because it seemed unlikely that the team would continue to exist. However, with Brawn's leadership and the hard work of the team, they managed to turn things around and achieve success.

A Winning Season

Despite the initial uncertainty, Button went on to win eight races out of a possible 17 that season, including six of the first seven. It was a remarkable achievement for Button and the team.

Mental Health Struggles

Button also opened up about his mental health struggles during the season. As the results started to decline in the second half of the year, Button faced challenges. However, he and Brawn persevered and ultimately secured both the drivers' and constructors' titles.

Button's Only Championship Title

This championship title would be the only one in Button's F1 career. He retired from the sport in 2017 after a successful and eventful career.

Plans for a Return

During his appearance on This Morning, Button also revealed his plans to return to motor racing next year. Fans eagerly await his comeback to the racing world.
