LANDO Norris poked fun at the troubles of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s bouncing Mercedes as he showed off his basketball helmet.

The McLaren driver has gotten to grips with his car while his British rivals continue to struggle.

The porpoising issue has left the eight-time World Champions Mercedes trailing in the wake of their faster rivals Red Bull and Ferrari.

McLaren has recovered after their own early-season struggles, with Norris outqualifying his teammate Daniel Ricciardo yesterday.

As he spoke about his unique basketball-themed helmet, the 22-year-old could not help but make fun of Mercedes’ now-infamous bouncing problems.

He said: “I mean, it’s not like elegant and wow but it’s just simple and different to what a lot of people go for, so it’s cool.

“The guys did a great job of actually making it look like a basketball. It’s not so simple. And, you know, it’s textured like a basketball as well.

“Maybe it would have suited George more, considering they like bouncing a bit more, so that could have been better. But yeah, I think hopefully mine is just a fast one.”

Russell’s bouncing Mercedes caused him major issues yesterday, as he managed to only qualify in 12th.

But Hamilton managed to partially overcome the car’s shortcomings to qualify a respectable sixth place.

Further up the field, the tense fight for pole was won by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, with his teammate Carlos Sainz making it a front-row lockout.

It was an impressive recovery from Sainz who crashed in practice and has since voiced his concerns over the safety of parts of the track.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was left frustrated after coming third in qualifying and pulled no punches over the team’s “incredibly messy” weekend.
