Las Vegas GP practice CANCELLED after just eight minutes as track safety issue sees Sainz’s Ferrari go up in sparks

, Las Vegas GP practice CANCELLED after just eight minutes as track safety issue sees Sainz’s Ferrari go up in sparks

A Dramatic Start

Formula One's first-ever Las Vegas Grand Prix practice session was abruptly halted after just eight minutes due to a track safety issue. The problem occurred when a drain cover failed, causing Carlos Sainz's Ferrari to burst into sparks while he was driving at 200mph.

A Costly Incident

The failed drain cover forced the cancellation of the session after only a few minutes. The incident was a major setback for F1's owners, Liberty Media, who have already invested close to $1 billion in the event. The Grand Prix was expected to attract high-rolling punters, some of whom had paid up to $150,000 for a ticket.

A Safety Risk

Race Director Niels Wittich made the decision to stop the race immediately, citing concerns about the safety of the circuit. The track, which is the second longest on the calendar, posed a risk due to potentially unsafe drain covers that could be dislodged by the downforce of the cars. Fans in the grandstands expressed their disappointment with boos.

Repeat Offenders

This incident highlights a failure on the part of both F1 and the governing body, the FIA, to learn from past mistakes. Earlier this season, newly installed kerbs at the Qatar Grand Prix caused Pirelli tyres to be torn apart. Despite this, no changes were made, and the same situation occurred in Las Vegas. The lack of a support series or a test event further exacerbated the safety risk.

Reactions and Fallout

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen had already criticized the race as being more of a show than a sporting event. Local residents have also expressed their frustration with the event, citing traffic issues and disruptions to businesses. F1 had hoped that the Las Vegas Grand Prix would become a new showpiece event, but it has instead been marred by problems.

A Historic Pattern

This is not the first time F1 has faced difficulties in Las Vegas. In 1982, the race held in the Caesars Palace car park was widely regarded as a failure. The 2005 United States Grand Prix in Indianapolis was another debacle, with only six cars competing due to concerns over the safety of the Michelin tyres.

Controversial Reactions

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff dismissed the incident as a minor setback, stating that it would not tarnish the event's reputation. Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur, on the other hand, expressed his dissatisfaction and called the incident unacceptable.

Financial Impact

The setback is likely to have a negative impact on F1's share price, which has already been declining throughout the week. However, the consequences could have been far worse if someone had been injured. The drain covers will be welded shut for the remainder of the weekend, but the damage to F1's reputation may already be done.

When Luck Turns

As any punter in Las Vegas knows, when luck is not on your side, it may be time to throw in the towel.
