The Mercedes pair struggled to work out what caused Leclerc to spin out

A tired Hamilton laid down on the floor when the footage of the crash emerged on the television screen, with his team-mate Russell drawing his attention.

Leclerc lost control of his rear towards the end of lap 17 and after viewing the incident Hamilton, who finished second, said: “He just made a mistake, no?”

A representative from Red Bull responded saying: “No it’s throttle blockage.”

Russell then interjected, asking: “Throttle blockage?”

“Yes. That’s what he said on the radio,” replied the Red Bull staff member.

Russell added: “What, his throttle came back in?”

Leclerc later clarified what happened and took responsibility for the retirement, suggesting it was his mistake that caused the crash.

The Monaco driver let out a frustrated scream after ending up in the tyre wall and was still annoyed with himself in the paddock after the race.

He told Sky Sports: “I am performing at the highest level of my career but if I keep the mistakes then it is pointless. If we lose the championship by 32 points I will know where they are coming from but it is unacceptable.

“I go through the same process all the time and try to analyse. It is a mistake and that is it. It is trying to push too much and I lost the rear. It has been a very difficult weekend for me, I struggled with the balance of the car.

“I made a mistake at the wrong moment.”

His loss was Hamilton and Russell’s gain as the Brits claimed the second and third places on the podium.
