Lewis Hamilton’s Replacement for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Practice Named

Mercedes Confirms Frederik Vesti as Hamilton's Stand-In

Mercedes has announced that Frederik Vesti will step into Lewis Hamilton's shoes for the first practice session at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This comes as part of an F1 rule introduced last year that requires teams to run a rookie for two practice sessions throughout the season. With the Abu Dhabi race weekend serving as the season finale, several young drivers are set to make appearances to fulfill this requirement.

Vesti Impresses in Formula 2

Frederik Vesti, a 21-year-old Danish driver, has been selected by Mercedes to drive Hamilton's car in the first practice session. Vesti has previously participated in first practice in Mexico last month, replacing George Russell. He has had a successful season in Formula 2 for Prema Racing and is currently second in the F2 standings. There is a possibility that he could clinch the championship this weekend at the Yas Marina circuit.

Excitement and Gratitude from Vesti

Vesti expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to drive in FP1 at Yas Marina. He mentioned that his previous experience in Mexico was a significant moment in his career and that he learned a lot from working with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Vesti is looking forward to building on that experience and is grateful to the team for giving him this opportunity.

Challenging Season for Mercedes

Mercedes has had a challenging season, failing to win a race in 2023. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell's final places in the Drivers' Championship have already been confirmed, with Hamilton finishing third and Russell finishing eighth.
