Tragic Loss in the Racing World

Racing legend Gil de Ferran has passed away at the age of 56 while racing with his son, Luke, at The Concourse Club in Opa-Locka, Florida. The 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner reportedly suffered a heart attack during the private race.

Heartfelt Condolences

The racing community is mourning the loss of Gil de Ferran. Fellow driver Tony Kanaan stated that de Ferran suffered a heart attack and could not be revived. Roger Penske, the owner of Team Penske and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, expressed his condolences, saying, "It's a tragic loss and he will be deeply missed."

A Champion in Racing

Gil de Ferran accomplished great feats in his racing career. He won the Indy 500 for Team Penske, making it the third consecutive win in the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" for the team. He also won the Champ Car titles in 2000 and 2001 and had multiple victories in CART and IndyCar races.

Remembering a Friend and Mentor

Friends and fellow drivers are devastated by de Ferran's passing. Tony Kanaan, who considered de Ferran a mentor, expressed his grief, saying, "I lost a dear friend. I am devastated. I have to say, he went in Gil style, driving a racecar. If I could choose a way to go, that's what I could do." Marco Andretti also paid tribute to de Ferran, calling him "One of the real ones."

A Legacy of Speed

Gil de Ferran's racing career spanned several decades, starting with kart racing in the 1980s. He set the closed-course land speed record during CART in 2000, reaching a lap speed of 241.428 mph. He joined Team Penske in 2000 and had a successful partnership with the team.

Gil de Ferran will be remembered for his passion and contributions to the racing world. He leaves behind his wife, Angela, and their two children, Ana and Luke.
