Racing Legend Nigel Mansell Rakes in £1.3 Million Selling F1 Memorabilia

Racing icon Nigel Mansell has made a staggering £1.3 million by selling memorabilia from his illustrious Formula 1 career. The collection featured 178 items, including helmets, race suits, and trophies.

Helmet from First F1 Victory Sells for £68,400

The most prized item at the auction was the helmet Nigel Mansell wore during his first Formula 1 victory at the European GP in October 1985. The helmet fetched an impressive £68,400.

Other Notable Sales

Some of the other standout sales include:

  • 1992 French GP trophy: £25,200
  • Race suit, boots, and gloves from 1992: £21,600
  • 1994 steering wheel: £9,600

In addition, two personalized registration plates with the initials "5NM" sold for £50,400, while a 72cc motorbike Mansell rode in the pits sold for £24,000.

Celebrating a Legendary Career

Throughout his career, Nigel Mansell achieved an impressive 31 Grand Prix wins and 59 podium finishes. One of his standout moments was during the qualifying for the 1992 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. A framed time chart of that lap sold for £8,400.

Mansell, now 70, had kept his collection in a private museum in Jersey. He described the items as "the material manifestation of the most significant moments of my career."

The auction at Sotheby's in London featured 178 items, with nearly 150 more lots still to be sold.
