Do players get paid at the Ryder Cup?

Introduction

The Ryder Cup is one of the most highly-anticipated golfing events in the sporting calendar. Fans eagerly await this prestigious tournament to see top players from Team Europe and Team USA battle it out on the golf course. But have you ever wondered if these players get paid for their participation? Let's find out.

No Paycheck for the Players

Contrary to what you might think, Ryder Cup players do NOT receive a paycheck for playing in the event, or even for winning it. Representing their team colors and competing in the tournament is seen as a great honor for the players.

Generous Donations

Although the players don't receive monetary compensation, the PGA does provide each member of Team USA with a generous gift of $200,000. This amount is then donated to the charity or charities of their choice. Half of this donation goes to established organizations like the Boys & Girls Club of America, the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship, and the PGA Junior League.

A Tradition of Gifts

On the other hand, it has become a tradition for the captain of Team Europe to present each player with a special gift. In 2018, French icon Thomas Bjorn surprised his team by gifting them personalized Rolex watches when Europe emerged victorious in the competition.
