, Legendary abandoned golf course recreated by ROBOT bulldozers 1,000 miles away

A legendary golf course, once abandoned and demolished, has been brought back to life by robot bulldozers located 1,000 miles away from its original site.

Background of the Lido

The Lido, located in Long Island, New York, was originally constructed in 1914 and opened in 1917. Designed by Charles Macdonald, a prominent figure in early American golf, the course was highly regarded among golf enthusiasts.

A New Beginning

After being abandoned and demolished in the 1940s, the Lido is now set for a comeback. However, the new course will be situated in Sand Valley, Wisconsin, 1,000 miles away from its original location.

Recreating the Course

Brothers Michael and Chris Keiser announced their plans to recreate the Lido in 2021, aiming to stay as true as possible to the original layout. Due to limited archival information, the creation is being based on a 3-D computer simulation of the course developed by Peter Flory.

The Role of Technology

Golf course architect and president of Oliphant Golf, Craig Haltom, believes that Flory's 3-D model will be invaluable in the construction process. By digitally capturing the model's depiction with a real contour map, software programmer Brian Zager was able to program robot bulldozers with a digital GPS canvas to create the course.

Course Details

The new Lido will operate as a private club, with limited tee times available to the public. Currently, nine holes are open for play, including the original 398-yard Par four hole named "Plateau" with its island fairway. Another notable hole is the 412-yard Par 4 known as the "Punch Bowl," which serves as the 12th hole on the course.

Overall, the recreation of the legendary Lido golf course showcases the power of technology and the determination to preserve and revive golfing history.
