Rory McIlroy accidentally BREAKS FAN’S HAND with tee shot at The Open Championship but sits two off lead after day one

RORY McILROY enjoyed a tremendous start to the 2022 Open Championship.

But one of his errant shots did leave one fan black-and-blue.

Rory McIlroy accidentally broke a fan’s hand at The Open

Charlie Kane, who does social media for the PGA Tour, was at St. Andrew’s as a supporter.

However, he got more than he bargained for after one of McIlroy’s wayward tee shots hit his left hand.

Kane went to St. Andrew’s Community Hospital and was diagnosed with a fractured hand.

He showed off the receipts on Twitter in a series of photos, in which his hand was visibly discoloured and fingers swollen.

He captioned the tweet by saying: “Fractured hand after Rory McIlroy’s drive landed on my knuckle.

“He shouted fore. I did not heed the warning. #TheOpen”

Aside from that wayward drive, it was an otherwise great day for Rory McIlroy.

His opening round score of 66 leaves him just two shots off Cameron Young in the lead on -6.

It was his lowest opening score at The Open since 2014, when he also started with 66 and went on to win the tournament outright.

Afterwards, he told Sky Sports: “I played well. Very solid. I think everyone knows, on this golf course, you have to make your score going out and I did that.

“I started off tremendously with a bonus at the first; little bit of adrenaline with that second shot and hit it a bit far.

“Birdied the par five, birdied a couple of those short par fours with a wedge in my hand and then, on the back nine, even though it is down wind, it got so tricky.

“I birdied the holes that I should have birdied today and only made one mistake.

“The way this golf course is playing, how firm and bouncy and tricky it is, it is all about limiting your mistakes, and one bogey out there today, it was good.”
