Ryder Cup Hero Ian Poulter Once Coached Kids for £1 and Sold Sausage Rolls

The Rise of Poulter

Ian Poulter, known as "Postman" for his stellar performance in the Ryder Cup, has amassed a fortune of around £70 million in his golfing career and now owns an impressive collection of seven Ferraris. But before his professional success, the Arsenal fan lived a more modest lifestyle, coaching youngsters for just £1 and even selling sausage rolls.

A Passionate Coach

Poulter began his rise as a golf coach at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club, where he helped develop junior players through Sunday morning coaching sessions. Kids between five and ten years old would attend these sessions, paying only £1 each for the opportunity to receive coaching from the man who would go on to win 17 professional tournaments. Poulter's love for the game and enthusiasm drew in at least 60 children for each session.

Lee Scarbrow, PGA pro at Leighton Buzzard, said, "It was Ian’s love of the game and his enthusiasm that helped drive this forward. He was a good little coach – anything he put his mind to he was good at, which made him such a pain in the neck at times!"

A Helping Hand

Poulter's generosity extended beyond coaching, as he also came up with a unique fundraising idea for the club. In order to cover the cost of a new pro shop, Poulter suggested selling hot soup and sausage rolls from a shed. He would personally visit the baker's each day to pick up the sausage rolls. Scarbrow added, "Every little helped the club, and it showed he had an entrepreneurial side to him – he now deals in Ferraris, which is a bit of a step up!"

Poulter's Petrol Power

Poulter's collection of Ferraris alone is worth £20 million and includes two LaFerraris, a Ferrari F40, a Ferrari F12 TDF, a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO, a Ferrari F50, and a 2002 Enzo Ferrari. In addition, he owns a Bugatti Veyron, a Porsche 911 GT2, a Ford GT, and several Mercedes cars.

Most of his impressive car collection is housed at his sprawling Florida mansion, where he resides with his wife Katie and their four children.

Golfing Success

Poulter's success on the golf course has allowed him to finance his lavish car collection. Since turning professional in 1995, he has secured wins at the World Golf Championships in 2010 and 2012. However, his most significant achievements have come in the Ryder Cup, where he has represented Europe seven times, accumulating five victories and 16 points in total.

Despite his impressive record, Poulter will not be competing in the upcoming Ryder Cup in Italy. He, along with other notable players, was excluded from the event after joining the controversial LIV Golf tour, reportedly earning between £16 million and £24 million for his involvement.

A Ryder Cup Hero and Fashion Icon

Poulter, known for his daring and eye-catching outfits on the golf course, has not only made a name for himself in the sport but also through various sponsorship deals. He has partnered with brands such as CoolSculpting, IJP Design, Oakley, Nikon, Audemars Piguet, OKX, EA Sports, and private jet company Marquis Jet.

While his coaching days may be behind him, Poulter's extraordinary golfing career and entrepreneurial spirit have propelled him to both fame and fortune. From coaching kids for £1 to owning a collection of luxury cars, Poulter's journey is truly remarkable.
