The operation was done to try and fix post-traumatic arthritis.

Tiger Woods has undergone surgery on his ankle

The problem stemmed from his horror car crash in 2021 that almost cost the golf legend his life.

Woods, 47, shattered his right leg as well as fracturing the talus bone in his ankle.

And despite returning to competitive golf after multiple operations, the trouble with his ankle had persisted.

Now, though, he has gone under the knife in New York with surgeon Dr Martin O’Malley, who deemed it to have been successful in resolving the arthritis.

A post on Woods’ social media said: “Earlier today, Tiger underwent a subtalar fusion procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture.

“Tiger is currently recovering and looks forward to beginning his rehabilitation.”

Rory McIlroy replied to the statement and said: “Get well soon, GOAT.”

Woods played in the Masters earlier this month but withdrew after the third round, citing a recurrence of plantar fasciitis.

The problem also forced him to sit out of the Hero World Challenge but did play at the Genesis Invitational in February.

But he will now be sidelined again as he starts rehab, with no clear idea of how long it will take.

However, it seems highly unlikely to be ready for the PGA Championship next month or the US Open in the middle of June.
