US Open set to be delayed until later in summer after Winged Foot venue is forced shut

US OPEN chiefs are set to postpone the 2020 tournament until later in the summer, according to reports.

The New York Post say the tournament which is scheduled to be played in June will be put back a few months.

This year’s US Open has been thrown into doubt after Winged Foot was closed

The USGA have maintained that they will have a decision by mid-April on the event pencilled in for June 18-21 at Winged Foot in suburban New York.

The Masters and PGA Championship scheduled for April and May respectively have already been postponed.

All PGA Tour events until May 21 have also been cancelled as coronavirus causes chaos stateside.

America now have the most reported cases of any country in the world with over 86,000.

The New York Post quoted a source as saying: “We remain hopeful about late summer, [maybe] early September.”

However, a USGA spokesman told ESPN that nothing had been finalised at this point.

A USGA statement read: “We continue to hold the dates for the US Open at Winged Foot in June and monitor all available guidance and regulations to do what is in the best interests of the community for the health and safety of all those involved.

“We had previously stopped the build of our corporate hospitality tents and are creating contingency plans should we need to pivot, given that postponement is a possibility. It is premature at this point to speculate on any potential date or location changes, but we expect to make a decision sometime in the middle of April.”

The Olympic golf tournament in July was also cancelled with the Tokyo 2020 Games being called off.

The Open Championship is still scheduled for July 16-19 while the Ryder Cup is also on the calendar for the last week in September.

Rory McIlroy would be up for a Masters in October

Rory McIlroy also threw his weight behind rearranging the Masters for October.

He told SiriusXM: “A Masters in the fall, October time, I think it would be pretty cool. It would be a very different look than what you usually see at Augusta.

“It gives us some room for manoeuvring, depending on what happens over the next few weeks.

“I think it’s definitely a possibility if they want to get the 2020 Masters in, I think that could definitely be a possibility. I’m sure they can make it happen if they want it to happen.”
