Adayar lands huge late gamble to win the Epsom Derby for Adam Kirby at 16-1 – days after he lost ride on John Leeper

FROM rock bottom to on top of the world – Adam Kirby took the brave man’s route and pulled off a huge gamble in the Derby on Adayar.

Just 72 hours after he lost the ride on leading fancy John Leeper, Kirby squeezed Adayar through a tiny gap on the rail to land a monster plunge, with the horse backed into 16-1 from 50s.

Adayar won the Derby at Epsom at 16-1

It capped a whirlwind few days for Kirby and gave trainer Charlie Appleby his second win in the Epsom Classic.

Kirby admitted he was down in the dumps at receiving the news that he had been ‘jocked off’ for Frankie Dettori earlier this week.

But given a second chance, he made it count in spectacular fashion in the world’s most famous race.

Kirby said: “There are ups and downs in racing, but when it comes to Charlie Appleby he is a top man and I can’t thank him enough.

“He is a true gentleman and a great trainer, I want to thank him very much for putting me on this lad.

“He got up the rail very quick thankfully, I can’t believe it.

“It’s the Derby lads, you know what I mean? Get up there!”

Rank outsider Mojo Star stayed on for second at 50-1, with Hurricane Lane (6-1) bagging third, giving Appleby and Godolphin a 1-3 in the big race. Hot favourite Bolshoi Ballet (11-8) was well beaten.
