Amateur jockey aged 59 seals first win after 40 years with stunning ride on 92/1 outsider from the back of the field

AMATEUR jockey Simon Condon won his first EVER race at Kilbeggan on Thursday, aged 59.

The Brit has been racing horses for 40 years and finally claimed victory with 92/1 Eat The Brook, who also won his first race.

But one last push from Simon Condon was enough for the pair to secure victory

It was a dramatic ending in the 6.15 as Eat The Brook came over the last jump in second place on the outside of A Different World.

But a final push for the finish line saw Eat The Brook create a gap and make it a day to remember for healthcare assistant Condon.

Condon also owns nine-year-old Eat The Brook, who suffered a life-threatening injury earlier in his career.

Prior to sealing victory Condon had never even finished inside the top three in a race, so he was naturally delighted with the win.

Mike Tyson smokes joint with fan outside hotel after ‘punching plane passenger’

He told RacingTV: “I’ve been waiting a long time for this.

“It’s hard to describe the feeling. Normally when I ride, there are always horses in front of me.

“To be in front, with nothing ahead of you? ‘Oh My God’ I got some buzz out of that. It’s the best feeling ever.

“It was amazing to pass the line in front – a day I’ll never forget. I’ll probably get emotional about it tomorrow.”

“Eat The Book was a handful in the early days and I’ve had a fair few falls off him – he’s broke me up a good few times. Now, he’s a grand horse but he’s owed me that.

“My Dad bought him for me to ride and David’s done a great job training him. He broke his elbow in Thurles and the prognosis was very bad. It’s been some training performance to get him back.”
