This award-winning racecourse has vanished beneath a deluge of water as Storm Henk wreaks havoc across the country, leaving race organizers in a state of chaos.
Flooding Devastates Racecourse
The renowned Huntingdon racecourse has been completely engulfed by floodwaters, as shown in these shocking images. The yellow weather warning for parts of England came too late to save the track from being submerged.
Battered by the Elements
Worcester racecourse has also suffered extensive damage, with hardly anything left to identify beneath the floodwaters. The severity of the situation is evident in these photos.
Extent of the Damage
The nearby Alconbury Brook bursting its banks has added to the devastation, leaving the home bend, straight, jumps, and hurdles underwater. Even the parade ring and lower steps of the grandstand have been completely submerged.
Recovery Efforts
Fortunately, as the worst of the weather passes, some of the water has started to drain off. However, the past few weeks have been incredibly difficult for Huntingdon racecourse, which recently lost its biggest race of the year, the Peterborough Chase.
Other Racecourses Affected
Worcester racecourse is not the only one in trouble. Chepstow, the location of last month's Welsh Grand National, has already canceled its upcoming race, citing total waterlogging and saturation due to heavy rainfall.
Upcoming Fixtures in Jeopardy
With racing at Ffos Las in south Wales and Huntingdon already abandoned, it seems likely that their next scheduled meetings will also be called off. Wincanton's seven-race card on Saturday is under a yellow weather warning, and an inspection has been scheduled for 8am on raceday. Sandown and Plumpton are also forecasted to receive heavy rain before their respective races on Saturday and Sunday.
