Huntingdon Racecourse Forced to Cancel Big Race

The beloved Huntingdon racecourse in Cambridgeshire was left underwater after a government flood alert turned out to be devastatingly accurate. As a result, the big Peterborough Chase card scheduled for Sunday had to be canceled.

Repeat Flooding for Huntingdon

This is the second time in three years that the Peterborough Chase has been called off due to flooding at Huntingdon racecourse. The venue has a history of floods, with the grandstand and surrounding buildings suffering damage in 2020.

Racecourse Submerged, Recovery Expected to Take Time

The racing surface at Huntingdon was submerged in large areas due to the flooding. While the floods were not as severe as in previous years, it will still take some time for the course to recover. The lawns in front of the grandstand and the members' car park are completely underwater, and there is standing water on the sand crossing and stable bend.

Peterborough Chase Likely to be Rescheduled

Racing officials are expected to agree to reschedule the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday. Cheltenham, known as the home of jumps racing, will host a two-day meeting starting on Friday, with the Paddy Power December Gold Cup handicap chase as the highlight on Saturday.

Exciting Lineup for the Paddy Power December Gold Cup

Trainer Olly Murphy's Thunder Rock is the current 3-1 ante-post favorite for the Paddy Power December Gold Cup. Other contenders include Monmiral at 5-1, Il Ridoto and So Scottish at 6-1, and Fakir D'Oudairies and Fugitif at 7-1. The race is expected to be highly competitive.

Heavy Rain Takes a Toll on British Racing

The heavy rain this winter has had a significant impact on British racing. Fontwell is currently subject to a precautionary inspection ahead of their Christmas Jumper raceday, and Southwell experienced severe flooding during Storm Babet in October.
