A Memorable Cheltenham Moment

Rith Dubh's most famous race was the 2002 National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham. Despite only winning one of his nine starts under O'Neill, his jockey's skill made the victory all the more extraordinary.

McNamara expertly guided Rith Dubh into the race, engaging in a thrilling battle with Timbera and a young Davy Russell. In the end, they emerged victorious by a head, creating a historic moment in Cheltenham history. The duo pulled an impressive 13 lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

A Fond Farewell

Frank Berry, racing manager for owner JP McManus, shared his thoughts on Rith Dubh's passing with the Racing Post. "He was a wonderful horse and the day JT won on him at Cheltenham was one of the greatest rides you would ever see," Berry said.

"JT waited and waited and coaxed him home. It was a brilliant ride and he was a wonderful horse," Berry continued, reflecting on the unforgettable race. "Rith Dubh had a long and happy retirement, and he will always be remembered."
