EVERYTHING Roger Varian touches at the minute is turning to gold.
Just six days after he won the St Leger at Doncaster with Eldar Eldarov, the Newmarket trainer banged in a mega 9,290-1 six-timer.
Sakheer completed a stunning six-timer for Roger Varian
The quietly-spoken 43-year-old is considered one of the best trainers in the country.
He has won Classics and Group 1 races around the world, but he had never had more than five winners in a day before – until now.
His day started with a bang at Newbury when Exoplanet won the opening Racing TV Novice Stakes under David Egan as the 5-2 favourite.
A little over 40 minutes later, Royal Champion (9-4) won the Doonside Cup at Ayr because Al Husn (9-2) flew home in the Fillies’ Handicap at Newmarket.
Mitbaahy (9-2) bagged a Group 3 at Newbury just moments before Dusky Lord caused a 14-1 upset in the Ayr Silver Cup.
And the best was yet to come as the exciting Sakheer (4-5f) routed the opposition in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes – capping a stunning afternoon.
Varian said: “You can never really expect things to go as well for us as it has today, but everything is clicking.
Of Sakheer, he added: “His work has always been very good, we thought he would win first time but he ran into a smart filly (Magical Sunset) at Windsor.
“He then won well at Haydock and he looks good, I was quite blown away with him. How good, I don’t know, but he is possibly the best of my two-year-olds.
“He has size and scope, he’s very exciting and I think he’ll stay seven furlongs or a mile.”
Racing fans were blown away by his achievement, labelling him a “genius”.
One tweeted: “The man is a genius trainer and has been for a while now, but moreover he’s a very nice man too.”
Another said: “What an afternoon for the stable and just a week after the St Leger.”
While another posted: “Varian is flying. Have to follow his horses right now.”
Varian’s day could get even better – as he has five runners still to come this evening.
