British Jockey Fined £30,000 and Banned for Two Months After Guilty Plea

Harry Bentley's Shocking Penalty

British jockey Harry Bentley has been hit with a jaw-dropping fine of over £30,000 and banned from racing for two months. The punishment comes after Bentley pleaded guilty to "improper conduct" surrounding a case that has been shrouded in mystery.

Insider Information and Potential Reward

Bentley, who rides in Hong Kong, has been found guilty of passing on insider information about horses he was riding. He allegedly did so in exchange for a potential financial reward, although he never actually received any money.

Statement from HKJC Chief Steward

In a statement, HKJC chief steward Marc van Gestel explained the decision, saying, "In determining penalty, the stewards took into consideration his guilty plea, the nature and circumstances of the breach, including that the evidence established that Mr Bentley did not receive the payment as detailed, Mr Bentley’s personal and professional circumstances at the time of the offence and his unblemished record in relation to similar offences."

Penalties Imposed

As a result, Bentley's jockey license has been suspended for two months, starting from November 3, 2023, the day he was initially stood down by the stewards. The ban will expire on January 3, 2024. Additionally, Bentley has been fined HK$300,000 (£31,379).
