Bryony Frost and Frodon storm to record-breaking King George success at Kempton Park on Boxing Day

THE King George big guns were left Frost-bit at Kempton as outsider Frodon caused a huge Boxing Day upset.

Brilliant Bryony Frost gave the 20-1 shot an ice-cool ride from the front to bag the biggest win ever for a female jumps jockey.

Frodon and Bryony Frost sprung a surprise in the King George

Sun columnist Frost, 25, has made a habit of breaking records during her fairytale career.

In winning the Kempton Park showpiece, she overtook Lucy Alexander as the all-time leading female jock over jumps with 175 winners.

And she reached that amazing milestone on the back of her best mate in one of the most important races of the year.

She grinned: “I can’t believe me and Frode are King George winners.

“He is one in a million. I know him like the back of my hand and he knows me.

“He is extremely special, I adore him. I would struggle to find another animal or human who means as much to me as he does.

“My brother told me on Christmas night I was level with Lucy Alexander’s record of 174 winners.

“He said imagine if you broke the record on Frodon in the King George. I said to him don’t be silly, things like that don’t happen – this is unreal.”

And there was no fluke about it, as Paul Nicholls’ popular Frodon jumped around Kempton like he was on springs.

Defending champ Clan Des Obeaux was struggling a long way from home, while Cyrname went out like a light on the final bend.

All the while their lesser-fancied stablemate was going on his merry way, and one final big leap at the last sealed the deal.

Waiting Patiently flew home late to grab second for Yorkshire trainer Ruth Jefferson, with Clan Des Obeaux a laboured third.

Frost said: “Paul’s record in the race is unbelievable and the horse has smashed all expectations coming into this.

“I got some great jumps out of him and I managed to get a small breather into him on the last bend.

Frost celebrated with Paul Nicholls after victory at Kempton

“That was the only time the whole race he actually listened to me, he ran away with me for most of the race.

“He was so balanced and I was able to move him into top gear in the straight. In these races it’s little margins like that that make a difference.”

The victory was Paul Nicholls’ 12th in the King George, and he was full of praise for the winning rider.

He said: “On his day he is a very, very good horse. Him and Bryony have such a good relationship.

“He beat some proper horse fair and square. She was very canny in front and managed to steady things up.

“She gave him a brilliant ride and the plan worked.”

Silver Streak had earlier set the tone on a day of shocks as he claimed the scalp of Epatante in the Christmas Hurdle.

Nicky Henderson’s reigning Champion Hurdle winner was sent off the 1-5 favourite to win the Kempton Grade 1 for a second year in a row.

But Silver Streak ripped up the script, making all the running under a ballsy Adam Wedge ride to comfortably beat the odds-on jolly into second.
