, Bryony Frost: Frodon is back and has already nearly run over Paul Nicholls plus it’s finally King George party time

WE’LL be hanging up the riding helmets and hunting out the boogie shoes tonight for an awesome evening in honour of the horse I love so much.

The pandemic meant we never got a proper chance to celebrate when Frodon won the King George on Boxing Day last year.

The season is clicking into gear

But his owner, Mr Vogt, has very kindly booked Wincanton racecourse and is throwing a party for the whole of the Ditcheat team – and we can’t wait.

We’ll have some dinner, and a boogie to some live music, and I can tell you I’ll be on the dance floor like a bat out of hell!

The girls have all been chatting away about their dresses and shoes, and it will be great to put our glad rags on and get together for the first time in ages – it’s going to be wicked.

I’m sure there will be a few double takes when people are in their frocks and posh gear, because we only see each other in riding gear and helmets. It’ll be like “oh, it’s you, I’ve worked with you for three years and didn’t recognise you!”

Sometimes when you have a big winner the weeks go by, it all rolls into one and before you know it a month has passed and you’ve not had a minute to celebrate.

It’s mega that Mr Vogt has made such an effort for us all, and everyone at Ditcheat is really looking forward to it.

Talking of Frodon, Thursday was his first schooling session back and he was doing his best impression of Concorde, squealing and bucking, and I had zero control!

There was a syndicate of about ten people on the schooling stand, Frodon is intelligent enough to know they’re all watching and always believes they are there to see him.

So he does his usual showing off, which everyone finds hilarious, and it was carnage. He was cutting corners and nearly running over Paul, Clifford and Harry.

For his age and considering the number of seasons he’s been doing it, the way he attacks his training every day is phenomenal. If you could bottle his enthusiasm and give it out to people, it would be one of God’s gifts.

What I loved was that Shelly, who does everything ”on the ground” with Frodon but had never ridden him before, was able to hack him home from training.

She does the mucking out, grooming, taking him to the races and stuff, but Hollie tends to ride him at home and me on the track.

So it was really nice that she got to see what his ears looked like from above at long last! That was the best bit of the day for me.

Things are really getting busy now and there are 150 horses going through the gates of Ditcheat every morning.

It’s a hive of activity and the echoes of steel shoes on the tarmac going through the village makes more noise than the church bells.

Days like that always make you realise how lucky we are to ride horses for a living.

As ever, stay safe and keep kicking.
