, Businessman who won £550,000 from Frankie Dettori’s Magnificent Seven sees his record-breaking horse lose to 8-1 shot

A BUSINESSMAN who won £550,000 on Frankie Dettori’s Magnificent Seven saw his record-breaking horse lose to an 8-1 shot on Thursday.

Big-spending Darren Yates has a reputation for dropping huge sums of cash on top prospects.

Interconnected, left, was a record-breaking £620,000 purchase but lost to 8-1 Brave Seasca at Huntingdon
Yates won a whopping £550,000 when he backed Dettori to win seven races at Ascot in 1996

Yates, from Lancashire, can afford to after scooping the mega jackpot when Dettori rode seven winners at Ascot in 1996.

He had promised his wife he would not back Dettori anymore but secretly staked £67.58 on the jockey’s rides that day, seeing them come in while he sat in the pub.

But even that jaw-dropping pay out would not have been enough to cover the £620,000 he paid for Interconnected in May 2019.

The six-figure fee remains a record for the most expensive jumps horse ever bought at a public auction.

But the seven-year-old – returning to the track after a 727-day break – was a surprise loser on his first start for Dan Skelton at Huntingdon.

Going off a strong 11-10 favourite, victory looked in the bag when he took the lead three out in the 2m contest.

But perhaps a lack of fitness showed in the end as Venetia Williams’ outsider Brave Seasca rallied late on under Gavin Sheehan to relegate him to second.

This was Interconnected’s first run since finishing second to Emitom on his hurdles debut in March 2019.

So while disappointing, there is every chance he can bounce back in the future.

Yates is a renowned big-money gambler who has spent more than £1million on racehorses.

The same year he bought Interconnected, Yates splashed just over £300,000 for Blaklion ahead of the Grand National.

But when the horse was withdrawn prior to the Aintree race he spent a further £170,000 on Don Poli as a replacement.

He and wife Annaley own several other top runners, including promising hurdler Ashtown Lad.
