Cambridgeshire Handicap: Local trainer Tom Clover hoping Balgair can land the big one to complete dream season

BALGAIR could have punters in Clover in Saturday’s Cambridgeshire Handicap.

Available at 100-1 earlier in the week, he’s snuck in at the bottom of the weights and is now a 16-1 shot.

Balgair scooted home by six lengths over the course and distance last weekend

And local trainer Tom Clover is desperate for a big Saturday winner to help take his operation to the next level.

He said: “We’ve had a brilliant season winners wise but we all need those horses to help take us up a notch.

“I’ve been in and around Newmarket all my life and a Cambridgeshire would be special. I love the race.”

Balgair won the amateur version of the Cambridgeshire last weekend and a 4lbs penalty has just edged him into the field for the big one.

The step up to nine furlongs worked a treat and Clover thinks there could be more to come.

He added: “He’s come out of the race last week brilliantly so we thought we’d take our chance.

“The step up to nine furlongs worked really well and he looked to improve for it.

“It’s obviously a big field so we should get the good gallop he loves too. He’s been running well all season he just hasn’t had the pace to aim at.

“I’d be amazed if we don’t get that today!

“I’m just praying the rain stays away as he loves it quick. That would be my only worry.

“We’ve got Jimmy Quinn booked as he can do the eight stone no worries at all.

“I’ve got everything crossed – it would mean everything if he ran a big race.”
