The nation united in celebrating his remarkable life – and celebrities are now leading calls for statues around the UK to remember him.

On the sporting front, racing has shown the lead in honouring the national treasure.

And all jockeys competing today will wear black armbands in his memory.

PJA executive director Dale Gibson said: “Sir Tom improved the wellbeing and spirits of the nation during the initial lockdown, including his sterling work to raise money for NHS charities.

“Every perofessional jockey at some point in their career will need the help and support of the NHS following a fall.

“Every jockey wanted to show a small token of apprecitation for this remarkable man.”

Captain Tom, who raised millions for the NHS at the start of the pandemic, was admitted to hospital last Sunday after struggling with his breathing.

His family confirmed in a statement he had passed away.

Daughters Hannah and Lucy said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear father, Captain Sir Tom Moore.

“We are so grateful that we were with him during the last hours of his life; Hannah, Benjie and Georgia by his bedside and Lucy on FaceTime. We spent hours chatting to him, reminiscing about our childhood and our wonderful mother. We shared laughter and tears together.

“The last year of our father’s life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he’d only ever dreamed of.

“Whilst he’d been in so many hearts for just a short time, he was an incredible father and grandfather, and he will stay alive in our hearts forever.”
