, Cheltenham Festival Trials Day ABANDONED with course ‘waterlogged and unraceable’ after deluge of rain

CHELTENHAM’S huge Festival Trials Day set for tomorrow has been abandoned.

The course is ‘waterlogged and unraceable’ after a deluge of rain.

Cheltenham Festival Trials Day has been abandoned

A post from the racecourse’s official Twitter account read: “Following an inspection with the BHA’s Senior Inspector of Courses, unfortunately tomorrow’s raceday has been abandoned as the course is waterlogged and unraceable.

“With rain and snow forecast, there is no prospect of an improvement ahead of racing.”

An inspection was due to take place at 2pm today but a review of the track was brought forward.

Heavy rain over the past two nights scuppered hopes of the course recovering in time.

It means the seven-race card – the last meet at the home of jumps before March’s Festival – is the latest in a long line of fixtures to fall victim to the weather.

The Jockey Club is in talks with the British Horseracing Authority about relocating the races.

The Grade Two Cotswold Chase and Cleeve Hurdle would be held elsewhere, along with ‘a couple of other races’.

A combination of heavy rain, snow and the impact of Storm Christoph has caused carnage with racing fixtures.

Huntingdon was due to host today but the track is flooded and even parts of the grandstand underwater after a nearby river burst its banks.

And Uttoxeter’s meet for Sunday has already been axed.

More to follow.
