Clive Cox confident Golden Horde can get one over his elders in Saturday’s Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock

CLIVE Cox is hopeful his Golden Horde can take another leap forward in Saturday’s Betfair Sprint Cup.

The Commonwealth Cup champ has been beaten by the elder statesmen the last twice, but Cox reckons his star can bridge the gap at Haydock.

Golden Horde bolted up in the Commonwealth Cup under regular partner Adam Kirby

A third in the July Cup was followed by a fifth to Space Blues in France but he heads to Merseyside as a 9-2 shot with the sponsors.

And with Oxted ruled out the Royal Ascot hero takes on Dream Of Dreams for the first time and last year’s winner Hello Youmzain.

Cox said: “He’s had a brilliant start to the season, and has been fine since France.

“It’s a shame Oxted was ruled out but we still have to take on some smart horses like you always do in a race like this.

“He’s run very well still the last twice but it’s always tougher taking on the older sprinters.

“There’s more to come from our horse though and we think he’s still improving.”

The forecast looks ominous up at Haydock and the Group 1 could be run on testing ground.

And Cox – who won the race with Harry Angel in 2017 – hopes the worst of the weather misses the course.

He added: “He goes with a bit of give in the ground but we wouldn’t it too bad.

“Haydock can get very soft and that probably wouldn’t suit our horse as much as it would some of the others.

“We’re excited though. It’s always been the plan and I know he can win another good race this season, we wouldn’t be here otherwise.”

Dream Of Dreams has tightened at the top of the market at 11-4, with Kevin Ryan’s Hello Youmzain next in at 3-1.

Aidan O’Brien’s Lope Y Hernandez has also been popular and is as short as 9-2 with Betfair.

Conditions look like being on the easy side for the feature, without being in the extreme.

Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright described the ground as good to soft on Wednesday morning, but some rain was expected by the start of the three-day meeting on Thursday.

Even so, Tellwright does not anticipate the ground being any more testing than soft.

He said: “We are good to soft. It might rain later today and tomorrow. We might get six millimetres.

“I think the best scenario in terms of ground for Saturday is good to soft, worse case is soft.”
