Cracking Surprise springs Boyne Hurdle surprise as Grand National hero Tiger Roll returns with encouraging fifth

THERE was no dream comeback for Tiger Roll, but it’s safe to say he’s still in full working order.

And Gordon Elliott had plenty to smile about as stablemate Cracking Smartran out a 16-1 winner of the Grade 2 Boyne Hurdle at Navan, under the Tiger’s usual rider Davy Russell.

Off a steady pace, Russell pounced as the field turned in to pass Magic Of Light who began to falter.

Penhill looked the danger on the outside, but in typical Russell fashion he was away and gone and they cruised home by four lengths.

Tiger Roll had tanked round throughout as he blew away the cobwebs. He even looked a danger briefly before a lack of fitness showed.

The bookies left him unchanged at 5-1 for the Grand National but also for the Cross Country where he remains the 13-8 favourite.
