Curragh report: Magical casts her spell on Pretty Polly field with brilliant comeback victory

MAGICAL made her rivals disappear in the Pretty Polly Stakes.

Aidan O’Brien’s star was ‘retired’ over the winter – but on the evidence of this runaway the Coolmore ‘lads’ will get several big paydays out of the top mare yet.

Magical was an effortless winner on her return

And in truth the outcome of the Curragh Group 1, the fifth of her career, was rarely in doubt as the 2-5 favourite bowled along in the lead.

Seamie Heffernan, who has enjoyed a rare old time of things with Ryan Moore unable to ride in Ireland, judged the pace to a nicety and was motionless rounding the home bend.

In a matter of strides the daughter of Galileo was away and gone, with Cayenne Pepper far from disgraced in second place on her return to action.

But this was a one horse race, and she could now clash with old rival Enable in the King George later this summer.

O’Brien said: “She’s very exciting and always has been, but she’s got stronger this year and that’s why the lads decided to leave her in training. She was to go to No Nay Never.

“We could have gone to Sandown (for next week’s Coral-Eclipse), but this was a lovely race to start her off. We’ll probably let Japan go to Sandown – he’s had a run.

“We’ll look at the King George for her next. We learned last year that she gets 10 (furlongs) really well and gets 12 as well. It makes her very uncomplicated.

“You usually see a big change between three to four, but something really strange happened the way she changed over the winter to this year. It’s very obvious the power she has now.

“She had been working brilliantly, but we knew that she would come on plenty as well. The Irish Champion Stakes and the Arc are all races that are open to her.”

Paddy Power introduced Magical at 3-1 for the King George, which will be staged at Ascot next month.

Earlier on the card, Speak In Colours set up a potential July Cup tilt with a gutsy victory in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes for trainer Joseph O’Brien. He is a 20-1 shot with Betfair for the Newmarket feature.
