A SHOCK 40-1 winner at Leicester provided Zoe Davison and her family with some light relief on Sunday.

Dual Flat and Jumps trainer Davison is battling cancer in hospital.

Johnson dedicated Gustav’s win at Leicester to her sick mum

Daughter and former jockey Gemelle Johnson dedicated Gustav’s surprise victory to her mum, who she works alongside as an assistant trainer.

The 10-year-old Gustav, whose last win came at Exeter in April 2018, led narrowly approaching the last and stuck on bravely under stable jockey Page Fuller to beat 15-2 shot Fact Flow by a neck.

Johnson couldn’t hide her delight and Tweeted: “This has put a huge smile on Zoe Davison’s (mum) face, as she is currently in hospital battling her cancer.

“This ones for you mum.”

Concerned colleagues and racing fans gave their support to Johnson.

Trainer Ruth Jefferson, whose dad Malcolm died from cancer two years ago, replied: “Best wishes to your mum.”

One fan said: “Sending strength and prayers to your mum.”

Another Tweeted: “Best wishes to your Mum, hope she enjoys this win and is home soon.”

Davison trains both flat and jumps horses at Shovelstrode Stables near East Grinstead in Sussex.

Her most successful season to date came in 2017-18, when she trained 15 winners over jumps from just 60 runners.

Among her best horses is Ruacana, a one-time Grade 1 winner who is set to run over two-miles in a Flat jockeys hurdle at Lingfield on Tuesday.
