Epsom Derby hero Desert Crown a curious drifter in the market for King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes

EPSOM Derby hero Desert Crown was a surprising drifter in the market for the King George on Wednesday morning.

Sir Michael Stoute’s stable star won the biggest Flat race in Europe eased down from 150-1 Hoo Ya Mal and fast-finishing third Westover.

The latter is now as short as 7-4 with Paddy Power for the big Ascot race on Saturday, July 23.

Mishriff has been the subject of support with the same bookie and is now into 4-1.

While Desert Crown has gone in reverse, drifting to 6-5 with that firm having previously been odds-on.

Out to 2.34 (11-8) on the Betfair Exchange at the time of writing, some bookies including Sky Bet also removed the market.

The three-year-old colt is unbeaten in three and could not have been more impressive at Epsom.

But Westover’s trainer Ralph Beckett recently confirmed a rematch is on the cards.

He said: “He’s in good shape and I’m very happy with him.

“It’s not so much that we might reverse [the form with Desert Crown], it’s more that it’s the right race for the horse.

“If he’s good enough that will be great for all concerned, and if he’s not he’s not, but it’s the right race for the horse and that’s why we’re going.”
