Five ‘small’ racecourses you have to visit in Britain

EVERYONE knows you’re guaranteed a good day out at the likes of Ascot and Cheltenham.

But away from the mayhem of these giants, there are plenty of tracks that deserve your attention at some point.

Perth Racecourse

We start in bonny Scotland with the picturesque offering of Perth – the northern most racecourse in Britain.

If you’re not from nearby, it’s a commitment, but the town of Perth itself is ripe for a good time and it hosts a number of mini festivals both summer and winter, perfect for a trip away.

I recommend the ‘Glorious Finale’ at the end of September, a two-day meeting that always attracts a bumper crowd and some good horses.

So long as the weather holds up, you’re guaranteed a proper laugh in an amazing setting.

Windsor Racecourse

Officially known as ‘Royal Windsor Racecourse’, Monday nights at the Berkshire track are synonymous with punters.

Starting in early spring, and running through the summer, the evening fixtures are perfect for a post-work de-stress and easily accessible to anyone in London and the south.

It’s the only track I’ve ever arrived by boat – with regular ferries running from the town centre to the racecourse along the Thames.

The lawn area between the Parade Ring and Winners’ Enclosure is full of bars and street food stalls and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of the incredible sunsets. What more do you need?

Hexham Racecourse

Located in Northumberland, Hexham is arguably the most naturally easy on the eye on this list. The stunning countryside views around the course are hard to beat.

You’re unlikely to find a Gold Cup winner amongst the runners, but that’s part of its appeal, a real grassroots occasion.

The Irish are prone to sending across a horse or two and it’s always a course where a real gamble can unfold. Get it on your list.

Chester Racecourse

Another looker, Chester is about a unique a racecourse as you could wish for and officially the oldest course in the world.

Known as the Roodee, the racing is usually of good quality and the tight nature of the track offers up some thrilling racing.

The stands, bars and viewing areas literally overlook the track and what’s more is you’re guaranteed a good time after racing is done, with Chester a famously good night out.

Ludlow Racecourse

A real countryside gem, Ludlow Racecourse is another must attend for any racing fan.

The Shropshire track hosts Jumps racing for much of the year and is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Set in the hills, it’s another one guaranteed to get you some likes on Instagram.
