Former Top Jockey George Baker Opens Up About Life-Changing Accident

In a candid interview, former jockey George Baker reveals how a devastating fall during a race in Switzerland changed his life forever. Once a top earner in the sport, with career earnings nearing £12 million, Baker was living the dream, traveling the world and winning big races. However, everything came crashing down when he suffered bleeding on the brain in the tragic accident.

The Fall That Changed Everything

During a race at St Moritz's "white turf" meeting in February 2017, Baker crashed into the frozen surface, resulting in severe injuries, including bleeding on the brain. The extent of his injuries was so severe that he had to relearn how to walk, describing himself as a "34-year-old baby."

The End of a Promising Career

Despite his determination to race again, Baker was advised that another fall could have catastrophic consequences. Devastated by the news, he considered his career as a jockey over. This marked the end of a career that had already delivered notable victories, including the St Leger, Prix du Cadran, Champion Fillies' and Mares' Stakes.

Coming to Terms with a New Life

Now appearing regularly on Racing TV, Baker has bravely shared the emotional journey he faced after his accident. He admitted breaking down in front of his wife when he realized his career was over. Although he acknowledges the immense change his life has undergone, he has adjusted to the "new George."

Challenges and Adjustments

Baker's accident forced him to confront several unexpected challenges. He had never considered circumstances like power of attorney or joint bank accounts, leaving him and his wife unprepared for the sudden change in financial responsibilities. Additionally, relearning to walk was a significant obstacle for him, comparing himself to a baby taking their first steps.

A Second Chance

While his time in the saddle is over, Baker has embraced his new role as a presenter on Racing TV. He recognizes that not everyone gets a second chance and is determined to make the most of it.
