Charlie Appleby has bid farewell to another Group 1 winner as Modern Games retires in the midst of a challenging season.
The Godolphin outfit, who is known for their high standards, has experienced a frustrating campaign with below-average performances from their runners.
A disappointing season
Appleby had a remarkable year in 2022, securing a career-best tally of 152 winners and over £6.2 million in prize money. However, this season has been vastly different, with only 65 winners and less than £2 million in prize money so far.
Currently sitting in seventh place, a significant drop from challenging for last year's title, losing Modern Games is another blow for Appleby.
Modern Games' achievements
Modern Games provided Appleby with a significant victory in the Group 1 Lockinge at Newbury earlier this year. The talented horse also had a successful run in North America, winning two Grade 1 races in the United States and one in Canada, including two wins at the Breeders' Cup.
Frustration for punters
Punters were left disappointed when Modern Games was withdrawn before the start of the 2021 Breeders' Cup but was later reinstated. Despite winning the race, punters were unable to place bets, causing frustration among the betting community.
On social media, many users celebrated Modern Games' retirement while acknowledging the chaos he caused during the Breeders' Cup.
Continuing retirements
Modern Games is the fourth Godolphin star to retire this year, joining two-year-old champion Native Trail, Derby winner Adayar, and St Leger winner Hurricane Lane. These retirements highlight the challenges faced by Appleby during this unusually quiet season.
