Frankie Dettori could be stripped of Royal Ascot win as owners launch appeal into Commonwealth Cup result

FRANKIE Dettori and US trainer Wesley Ward could be stripped of their big win in the Commonwealth Cup.

Their horse Campanelle was promoted to first place in the Group 1 sprint by the stewards after they deemed first-past-the-post Dragon Symbol had caused interference.

Oisin Murphy confirmed connections of Dragon Symbol have lodged an appeal

Dragon Symbol was a head in front at the line but carried Campanelle into the centre of the track in the closing stages.

After a lengthy stewards’ inquiry the result was reversed, giving Dettori his 76th Royal Ascot winner and Ward his 12th.

Dragon Symbol’s trainer Archie Watson was visibly gutted as the result was announced, while jockey Oisin Murphy expressed his frustration at the stewards’ decision.

Murphy said at the time: “I am disappointed for the connections of Dragon Symbol.

“There was a massive Japanese interest, he finished the race in front, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“I didn’t give it much thought, I went in the stewards’ room, I told them I was on the best horse, Frankie said he was on the best horse, but it didn’t go my way.

“Sorry to the Japanese fans and to Archie Watson’s team, and well done to Wesley Ward.”

And Murphy confirmed he agreed with the decision of Watson and the horse’s owner Yoshiro Kubota to appeal the result.

Murphy said: “His owner is very keen to appeal. I’m yet to discuss things with Archie Watson.”

Murphy was also banned for four days for careless riding in the same incident.

The appeal hearing will take place on July 1 – but Murphy does not intend to contest his suspension.
