Frankie Dettori jokes ‘I hate you’ to fellow jockey William Buick in hilarious video after Irish Derby defeat

FRANKIE Dettori posted a hilarious video after his agonising defeat at the hands of William Buick in Saturday’s Irish Derby.

The legendary Italian came within a few strides of victory at the Curragh aboard Lone Eagle.

Buick beat Dettori in a thrilling finish to the Irish Derby at the Curragh on Saturday

But Buick came with a strong, late challenge on Hurricane Lane to snatch the prestigious Group 1.

The pals shared a ride to the airport after the race, and Dettori posted a short clip of the pair on his social media.

He joked: “I have to congratulate my friend William Buick for beating me in the Derby…

“I hate you – I hate you!”

Dettori had every right to be frustrated as he almost pulled off a masterful win on Martyn Meade’s runner.

The race was run at a fierce tempo, and Dettori was the first to commit for home at the top of the straight.

His 11-2 shot quickly opened up a three-length lead on the rest of the field and hit 1-50 in-running on Betfair.

But he began to tire inside the final furlong and Hurricane Lane finished powerfully from out of the pack.

He got up to win by a neck in the shadows of the post having been as big as 36-1 in-running on the exchanges.

The front two pulled seven lengths clear of Wordsworth in third for a British-trained 1-2 – just the second time a British runner has won the race since 1993.

The pair shared a joke on pulling up after the line, with Dettori reaching across to congratulate Buick as they eased down.

Dettori was chasing a third Classic win of the year, having also bagged the 1000 Guineas on Mother Earth and the Oaks on Snowfall.

It was a first of the season for Buick, though Hurricane Lane’s stablemate Adayar won the Derby at Epsom earlier this month.

Hurricane Lane’s odds for the St Leger were slashed after his win, with Coral cutting him into 4-1 from 8s.
