Frankie Dettori Reveals Plans for Life After Racing as Bookies Confirm He’s Cost Them £400 Million Over His Career

Worldly Travels Await Dettori in Retirement

Famous jockey Frankie Dettori has announced his plans for life after racing, and it involves seeing the world. The 52-year-old, who has had a dazzling 36-year career, is looking forward to some downtime with his wife now that his five kids have grown up and left their Newmarket mansion, which Dettori plans to rent out for an impressive £15,000 per month.

Final Classic Win in Sight

But before he embarks on his globe-trotting adventures, Dettori is determined to finish his racing career on a high. He is hoping to secure his 24th Classic win in the St Leger on Saturday, riding Arrest, the 10-3 favorite. Dettori's retirement tour has already been a success, with plenty of Classic victories and wins at major festivals.

Fitting Tribute at St Leger

BetFred, the title sponsors of the St Leger, have created a giant 10-foot-tall retirement card for Dettori. Fans attending the race can write their own messages of tribute to the legendary jockey throughout the event. BetFred estimates that Dettori's previous 23 Classic victories have cost the bookmaking industry over £400 million in pay-outs.

A Message from BetFred's Owner

Dettori's retirement card also includes a personal message from BetFred owner Fred Done. Done recalls the time when Dettori's seven-win streak at Ascot nearly brought him to his knees in 1996. Despite the hefty price tag, Done sees Dettori as a true legend and hopes for another victorious flying dismount in the BetFred St Leger.

Looking Ahead and Finding His Feet

Dettori is unsure of what exactly the future holds for him. He plans to regroup with his wife now that their children have left home, but he's also eager to explore more of the world. However, Dettori acknowledges that the transition into retirement may be challenging.

The St Leger Stakes

Competing against Dettori in the St Leger will be King Charles and Queen Camilla, with their horse Desert Hero. The current Betfred odds for the race are as follows:

  • Arrest – 10-3
  • Continuous – 4-1
  • Gregory – 4-1
  • Desert Hero – 5-1
  • Middle Earth – 8-1
  • Tower Of London – 12-1
  • Chesspiece – 12-1
  • Alexandroupolis – 25-1
  • Denmark – 50-1
