Frankie Dettori’s Melbourne Cup Dream Hangs in the Balance

Missed Opportunity

Frankie Dettori's long-held dream of winning the prestigious Melbourne Cup may be slipping away as he was overlooked for a key ride in the upcoming race. After finishing third in 2021, it seemed Dettori was on track to claim the coveted spot. However, Aussie native Blake Shinn has been given the reins instead, leaving Dettori's hopes in jeopardy.

Australian Connection

It's hard to blame the connections for their decision, as Shinn has a notable victory under his belt. He won the 2008 Melbourne Cup on Viewed, a feat that Dettori is yet to achieve. With this in mind, it's understandable why the Australian trainers have opted for Shinn over the legendary rider.

A Rocky Road

Dettori's chances of winning the Melbourne Cup have been marred by unfortunate incidents in the past. In 2016, he caused chaos during a race, resulting in a one-month ban. And in 2019, he was banned for nine meetings after his mount, Master Of Reality, caused interference. These incidents have likely contributed to the skepticism surrounding Dettori's suitability for the race.

Slim Chances

Given his track record and limited options, Dettori's chances of securing a Melbourne Cup ride this year seem slim. There are only a handful of horses left that he could make the weight on, further diminishing his prospects.

Retirement Plans Reconsidered

In a surprising turn of events, Dettori recently announced that he has canceled his retirement plans. After Champions' Day at Ascot, he will be heading to the US, where he will be based for the foreseeable future. Speculation is now rife that he may return to Britain next year, with Royal Ascot being a likely target for US trainers. Dettori has previously ridden for Wesley Ward at the prestigious event, and there are indications that he may collaborate with renowned US trainer Bob Baffert as well.
