A FRENCH jockey was handed a 15-day ban after an ‘extraordinary’ ride.
Trainer Gabriel Leenders apologised to punters after his rider Johnny Charron’s howler on Friday afternoon.
Mansionsa looked the winner for much of the straight but jockey Charron looked to ask for very little late in the day as his rival went past.
Even as the eventual winner ran on to the line Charron sat motionless on the 11-2 shot.
The stewards took swift action after the race and banned the experienced rider for 15 days.
Charron had told the enquiry he felt his horse had a breathing problem and had little more to give.
But the stewards didn’t seem to accept his argument and felt the horse clearly should have won the race at Cagnes-sur-Mer.
And laughably the fuming trainer had to take to Twitter to apologise to punters.
He said: “I want to apologize to the punters for riding my jockey on Mansiona.
“As the mare is in poor health, I never asked her not to win. He will surely take a layoff.”
Plenty felt the ban should have been longer.
One punter tweeted: “15 day ban is too lenient. Should be banned for few years!”
Another said: “The horse never got out of second gear and he can’t claim he never seen dangers as he glanced across, almost willing the other guy forward. As blatant a one as I have seen.”
