Gamble landed in Newbury Super Sprint as Richard Hannon’s fine spell continues with 59-1 double

RICHARD Hannon’s stellar couple of weeks continued in style with a fourth Newbury Super Sprint.

His well-backed Gubbass swooped for his chunk of the £200,000 pot on only his second start a race after stablemate Happy Romance dashed to a Hackwood Stakes win.

Sean Levey was in the winners’ enclosure again after a Newbury double

Sean Levey steered the 59-1 double home, with Gubbass leading a one-two for the yard as Symphony Perfect flashed home for second, half a length back.

Spirits will be high at the famous Herridge Stables and plenty of pockets will be fuller too after Gubbass’s 4-1 triumph.

Hannon said: “We were quite confident heading in, I told everyone to back him. I think I was the only one who didn’t.

“We always knew he was smart, he’s been off since his win but it was only that he was growing and not working that well we kept him back. He could have gone to Ascot but there was no point.

“He’s in the Richmond at Glorious Goodwood and we can look at that and he’s in the Gimcrack at York too.”

The Hannon family have farmed the race for years with Hannon Sr winning a stonking seven in his time – and Hannon Jr is over the moon with the form of his stable.

He added: “Things are going brilliantly at the moment and it’s been for everyone, all kinds of owners at all different scales – like today is for those horses that don’t cost a lot.”

Happy Romance’s owner Ray McMurray is now eyeing up a shot at Battassh at Glorious Goodwood.

Happy Romance flew home to win at 11-1

He said of her Hackwood win: “That was just brilliant, she proved she had trained on at Sandown and thankfully now there are people here to see it!

“We can go and have a go at Battaash now, she deserves it after that. She’s shown she’s quick enough.”
