‘Genius’ jockey slapped with ‘one of the biggest fines ever’ of more than £22,000 after shock win on 40-1 outsider

A JOCKEY has been slapped with ‘one of the biggest fines ever’ after winning on a shock 40-1 outsider.

Top Australian rider Nash Rawiller was stung to the tune of £22,860 for excessive whip use on Think It Over in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick racecourse in Australia last Saturday.

Rawiller was hit with one of the biggest fines in the history of Australian racing after his amazing ride

Rawiller was labelled a ‘genius’ by Ozzie media for his daring ride on the huge longshot, landing connections a whopping £1.3million with victory.

The 47-year-old jockey, who has won more then £79m over the course of his career, went against every other runner and diverted to the far rail where he found better ground.

That enabled him to see off 4-1 Zaaki by half a length, with 60-1 Mount Popa a further four lengths behind in third.

But stewards were quick to notice the amount of times Rawiller whipped the Kerry Parker-trained six-year-old.

Hauled in for questioning, Rawiller admitted using his whip eight times before the 100m post – and a total of 20 times in the race.

In addition to banning him for two weeks, Rawiller was fined more than £20,000.

This is one of the largest ever given to a jockey in Australia.

Rawiller has since launched an appeal against the severity of the ban – but not the whopping fine.

Speaking of his ride, Rawiller said: “If I didn’t get to where I got to I would have run a good second.

“I thought the ground would be better out there, and it was.

“When I decided to go the track was very wet until I got close to the fence, and I thought ‘oh no’ for a couple of strides.

“Once I got out there, he quickened for me and I knew I was going to be very hard to beat because he can run the sections like all these horses to win these races.

“He is as good as any of them, and I knew that I just had to get him to where he could show it.”
