Grand National 2020: Gordon Elliotts double champ Tiger Roll given joint top weight of 170 in Aintree showpiece

, Grand National 2020: Gordon Elliotts double champ Tiger Roll given joint top weight of 170 in Aintree showpiece

TIGER ROLL’S historic Grand National hat-trick bid is in the air after the handicapper gave him a mark of 170 for the Aintree showpiece.

Gordon Elliott’s champ is looking to emulate Red Rum by winning three Nationals, but owner Michael O’Leary has warned he may not run if treated too harshly.

If Tiger Roll wins in April at Aintree, he’d be the first horse to win the National three times on the spin.

Stablemate Delta Work will also run off 11’10 if showing at Aintree with Native River given 166.

The fact Tiger Roll would have to concede 4lbs to a Gold Cup winner is likely to frustrate O’Leary and Elliott and could put his Aintree bid at risk.

But Elliott seemed to take the news as well as can be expected and made clear he hoped he could run Tiger Roll.

He said: “We expected to have Tiger Roll as the top weight.

“He’s running off a mark of 170, 4lbs worse off with the second horse this year.

“The handicapper has a job to do and I’ve got no bones with it.”

In total, ten horses have been given 11 stone or more. They includeBristol de Mai (11st 8lb), one of seven contenders for dual Grand National-winning handler Nigel Twiston-Davies.

J P McManus’ Anibale Fly fourth in 2018 and fifth in 2019 has been allotted 11’2.

The 2017 victorOne For Arthur – trained by Lucinda Russell – is the other previous Grand National winner among the entries. His rating of 148 is the same as he carried in 2017.
