HARRY REDKNAPP is ready to miss part of his Soccer Saturday debut this weekend – so he can watch his horse run in a £125,000 race.

And the former Spurs boss has likened his runner to current Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

Redknapp’s first appearance on the Sky Sports show clashes with Shakem Up’Arry’s contest at Newbury.

Matches will be just past the half-hour mark when Redknapp, 73, says he will nip off to cheer on his horse in the Betfair Hurdle at 3.35.

Viewers are used to the shrieks and shouts coming from presenters on the show.

But they could be replaced with scenes of celebration should Redknapp’s horse – who has one win in eight races and is currently a 16-1 shot to win – land the spoils.

Racing fanatic Redknapp said: “They asked me about six weeks ago with Jeff Stelling and Paul Merson and the gang, and I said I’d do it.

“But I didn’t know the horse was running.

“I’ll have to find a way [to get out] for five minutes and make sure they’re showing a film of something else so I can watch the race, because I’m not missing it.”

Redknapp’s seven-year-old will be easy to spot to casual viewers.

Owing to his Portsmouth, West Ham and Tottenham background, Redknapp’s racing colours are a mix of red, white and blue.

And it is to a current Spurs star he likens his horse.

Asked if he could compare his horse to any current footballer, Redknapp, who is now helping Jonathan Woodgate out at Bournemouth, went for England striker Kane.

Redknapp, whose horse has won more than £16,000 in his short career, said in a call hosted by Great British Racing: “I’d like to think he’s a Harry Kane.

“Very professional, gives everything. Always gives his best, team player.

“I think he’s a pretty honest horse. I think he gives everything he has got to offer every time he runs.”

Redknapp suffered the personal tragedy of losing a horse after it fell at Lingfield last December.

His runner – the 11-10 favourite on the day – was tragically injured during a race.

But Shakem Up’Arry can give the football legend cause for joy, so long as he reverses the form with rival Metier, who finished 12 lengths ahead of him in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle last month.

Redknapp added: “He’s come up against some good horses in Metier and Shishkin last season. He’s ran well in big races to finish second

“It would give me a real buzz to win with him. Hopefully we can get back to the racecourse soon and see him run in some more big races.”
